Many parents will ask me, “Does my child have his ‘listening ears’ on? Does she need more help in understanding what I am asking?”
Here are three indicators that I refer to in order to determine my children’s level of understanding and how to communicate with them most effectively.
- Is my child listening when I give him directions? Is he simply ignoring me or is there a communication barrier?
- Is my child focused or distracted when I give directions?
- Does my child refuse to discontinue activities when given instructions for the next activity?
My responses to these questions help me to organize and change the way I communicate with children. Through The Successful Child, the company I co-founded, I help other parents learn how to most effectively communicate with their children. As a result, my family is benefitting, also.
